March 2026

The Quiet Inspiration of Shadows

As the heat and light gently builds, every leaf and plant finds a resting place for its second self

As I prepared to leave Jaipur last week, the strength of the March sun was starting to flex itself, a small taster of what was to follow as the dry season slowly builds to its inevitable and intolerable heat before the rains arrive in Summer. For me, however - this is the month that always marks my return to England and these first few days of proper warmth in India are bliss as we pad about on our peaceful little farm deep in the Aravali hills

Many of the tree's leaves have dried and dropped and suddenly it feels much lighter at ground level and on the terrace, stripped from the shade of all the post-monsoon greenery. This is when the shadows are at their most beautiful as they dance their way through the day, passing from walls to floors via chairs and tabletops, glancing at a hand or a foot along the way.

Whatever you put down; A book, a pair of shoes, a shirt, these things will all be animated by the watery flicker of jungle shadows

I spent a happy afternoon with my camera, capturing these beautiful shapes, some confident and with the single colour definition of a Matisse cut-out and others pale and whispery, clinging to their surface or watery with mutable edges on soft marble. I watched as floral patterns and hemlines became decorated or absorbed by these magical, quiet beings.

I love the different ways of seeing the clothes we make, sometimes on a model, on each other, draped on the back of a chair or as an inanimate object, brought to life by the light on a hot Jaipur day.
