The Best Shopping in Jaipur
Over the last decade, I’ve amassed the ultimate shopping list for Jaipur. Even after 10 years, I’m in no way immune to its unique appeal - there’s a good reason I pinpointed this Pink City as the second home of Daydress after London. It represents the ultimate in craft and creativity from across India - all of which meets here in the fabled old bazaar streets and tree-lined avenues of this most creative place. Whether you want to make clothes, or buy clothes, make or buy jewellery, take home piles of tablecloths and cushions, you will find every opportunity for it right here. I will keep updating this list as I keep discovering places, and feel free to email if you have any specific questions about this wonderful city. Happy browsing!
Brigitte Singh
This one comes with a big caveat - the shop is closing at the end of the year! After over 3 decades producing the best of the best in fine block-printed homeware and clothing, the French artist and designer Brigitte Singh is closing her doors. Brigitte’s Mughal inspired designs include the most famous big red poppy, which you can buy copies of all over the city (cows may be sacred here but design copyright, less so!). If you happen to find yourself here in time, hot foot it to try and buy some treasure. Fabric covered boxes, hand-quilted bed throws and beautiful clothing which takes its inspiration from historical French and Indian costumes
Craft boat
My amazing friend Priti started this company, not long before I first came to India. She fell in love with the cotton rag paper, made here in Jaipur and found the most charming ways to use it, block printing and marbling the sheets before transforming them into exquisite boxes, picture frames, lampshades and trays. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. Priti is devoted to preserving this craft at the highest level. She opened a small shop last year, just underneath her office not far from the airport - you can head here to buy her collections, which include nightwear, homeware and decorative accessories.
47 Jobner Bagh
Everyone's favourite boutique hotel in Jaipur, also has a very sweet shop attached run by Megha. Here you will find a lovely edit of scarves and jewellery, hand carved and brass animals and lovely treasures to take home. For the serious jewellery enthusiasts, ask Shiva to show you his showroom, also on-site with exquisite gold and be-jewelled pieces, both vintage and new
Nila House
Just across the road from Anokhi is Nila House, probably the most serene space in central Jaipur. It’s a highly considered shop-cum-gallery-cum-workshop space, Housed in a once run-down art-deco building restored to high-style by Bombay architects Studio Mumbai. It was founded by Carole Bamford of Daylesford fame and is run as a non-profit to support and promote the arts and crafts of India.
Find simple and beautiful clothing and homeware in white handloom cotton and indigo or madder. There is also a seasonal market every quarter where makers from across the region come to sell their wares direct to the public.
The Old City
Bapu Bazaar
Any rickshaw driver will know this bazaar, it's touristy but great fun. Colourful camel leather sandals, jewellery, textiles, painted trucks laden with textiles. This is quite a haggly place, generally people ask for about 3 x the actual price. If you hate haggling - then perhaps this one isn't for you... You can have your hands or feet decorated with henna here - or, sit and watch as Indian women have it carefully applied for weddings
Tripolia Bazaar
My favourite bazaar! Tripolia runs just above the city palace. This is where you'll find lots of stainless steel kitchenware, painted metal trunks, brass teapots, votives and padlocks shaped like a fish or a camel and stripy coloured shopping bags. Dip into the covered bazaars at either end of the road to discover alleys of sari and ribbon shops
JK Textiles & Ridhi Sidhi
If you want to stock up on textiles, then I'd really recommend hopping aboard the rickshaw of Dinesh Sharma. Dinesh knows all the places and will whizz you around in his trusty auto. Ridhi Sidhi and J&K are where you find stacks upon stacks of vintage kantha quilts, suzanis, Gujarati costumes, and very chic camel wool shawls and embroidery from Jaisalmer. Rajasthan Arts & Textiles
For antique textile lovers - Subash Sharma's shop, just outside the walls of City Palace and opposite the entrance of Jantar Mantar is a treasure trove. From Silver and paintings to wonderful rugs, the most exciting things for me are the cupboards full of neatly stacked roller prints from Manchester that have some to Jaipur via Central Asia. Madness!
khanoom
British designer Simon Marks founded Khanoom following on from successful careers is both costume, textiles and master baking! (We all miss his cakes at the sadly long-gone Cafe Palladio) Anyway - Khanoom is a triumph. The most beautiful, hand painted ceramics and tableware is produced by his highly skilled team in a very nice studio about 30 mins outside the city. There are painting workshops and you can see the master painters and potters in action. If you love tableware, you can commission a collection for yourself! Beautiful things, very very beautifully made
idli by thierry journo
I am just so into French ex-pat Theirry's beautiful paper lanterns which he has designed and has made here in Jaipur. They come in a multitude of colours as well as silver and gold, and are available with wall and pendant fittings. His shop is theatrical and chic with tableware and clothes that reflect his love of the decorative arts
Anokhi shop & cafe
A stalwart of the city. Anokhi with its famous organic cafe and shop is not to be missed! Prices have gone up recently, but it’s still great value by Western standards. Find fabulous block-print homewares, bedlinen, and wonderful clothes! Some pieces have a nod to western-style, but my favourite pieces are the great dresses, long skirts, rows of Kurtas and the children’s clothes are adorable - I always buy lots of the kid’s Indian-style PJ’s. You will shop your socks off here!
bar palladio
The famous bar designed by Marie Anne Oudjans sits in the grounds of the Narain Niwas hotel. As well being the prettiest and chicest spot to enjoy drinks and supper, there is also a small and lovely shop where you can find homewares and nightwear with a distinctly Palladio feeling. Block printed cushions and pretty tablelinen in their signature colours are irresistable
